How is ATAR calculated from HSC marks?

Your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is calculated following these steps:

  1. Subject Selection: Your best 10 units are used (including at least 2 units of English)
  2. Scaling: Raw HSC marks are scaled based on the difficulty and competitiveness of each subject
  3. Aggregation: Your scaled marks are combined to create an aggregate score (out of 500)
  4. Ranking: Your position is calculated relative to all other students in your year

Note: The ATAR is a rank, not a mark. An ATAR of 80.00 means you performed better than 80% of your year group.

Frequently Asked Questions About ATAR Calculation

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0 and 99.95 that indicates a student's position relative to all students in their age group. It's used by universities as the primary criterion for admission into undergraduate courses.

Your ATAR is crucial for university admission as each course has a minimum ATAR cutoff. The more competitive the course, the higher the ATAR requirement will be.

Based on historical data, these subjects typically scale well:

  • Mathematics Extension 1 and 2
  • Physics and Chemistry
  • English Advanced and Extension courses
  • Language courses (especially Extension)
  • Economics

However, it's important to choose subjects you enjoy and will perform well in, rather than selecting solely based on scaling. A high mark in a moderately-scaling subject is often better than an average mark in a high-scaling subject.

Yes, at least 2 units of English (Advanced, Standard or ESL) must be included in your ATAR calculation. This is mandatory regardless of your other subject choices.

Since English is mandatory, performing well in this subject is particularly important for your overall ATAR. Many students find that improving their English marks is one of the most effective ways to boost their ATAR.

Our ATAR calculator uses historical scaling data and the official ATAR calculation methodology to provide a reliable estimate. However, several factors can affect the accuracy:

  • Scaling factors change slightly each year based on overall student performance
  • The exact ATAR calculation algorithm is complex and not fully public
  • Individual circumstances like school assessment ranks can also impact your final result

For most students, our calculator provides an estimate that's within 1-3 points of the actual ATAR, which is sufficient for planning purposes.

ATAR requirements vary widely depending on the course and university. Here are some examples of typical ATAR cutoffs:

  • Medicine/Surgery: 99.00-99.95
  • Law: 90.00-98.00
  • Engineering: 80.00-92.00
  • Business/Commerce: 75.00-90.00
  • Science: 70.00-85.00
  • Arts/Humanities: 65.00-80.00
  • Education: 70.00-80.00
  • Nursing: 65.00-80.00

Remember that many universities offer bonus points and alternative entry pathways if you don't quite meet the ATAR requirement.

Popular University Courses and ATAR Requirements

University Course Minimum ATAR
University of Sydney Medicine 99.95
University of Melbourne Law 98.00
University of NSW Engineering (Honours) 91.00
Monash University Commerce 86.00
University of Queensland Science 80.00
RMIT University Design 75.00
Western Sydney University Nursing 70.00
Australian Catholic University Education 65.00

Note: ATAR cutoffs may change each year. Check with specific universities for the most up-to-date information.

HSC Scaling Guide

Subject scaling factors affect how your HSC marks convert to ATAR points

High Scaling Subjects
  • Mathematics Extension 2 (~1.20)
  • Mathematics Extension 1 (~1.15)
  • English Extension 2 (~1.15)
  • Language Extension courses (~1.15)
  • Physics (~1.08)
  • Chemistry (~1.08)
Moderate Scaling Subjects
  • Mathematics Advanced (~1.10)
  • English Advanced (~1.05)
  • Economics (~1.06)
  • Software Design (~1.07)
  • Language Continuers courses (~1.05)
  • Legal Studies (~1.04)
Lower Scaling Subjects
  • Mathematics Standard 2 (~0.92)
  • English Standard (~0.95)
  • PDHPE (~0.95)
  • Business Studies (~1.00)
  • Community and Family Studies (~0.90)
